SICMA

Development of a system for the prevention and response to marine and air pollution by Hazardous Noxious Substances

The growing increase in the transport and management of chemicals, both in the open sea and in port areas, has led to international awareness of the need to develop contingency measures to respond chemical spills, specially focused on those spills of substances known as Hazardous Noxious Substances.

In recent years, scientific and technological advances have focused on developing techniques, procedures and tools aimed at managing and preventing oil spills. However, there is a lack of similar tools to respond to chemical pollution events in the marine environment, especially in port environments.

In order to respond to this problem, the project aims to develop a system called SICMA for the prevention and response of marine and air pollution derived from spills of hazardous noxious substances which can occur at loading, unloading and handling operations in the maritime and port areas.

SICMA will enable maritime facilities and public administrations which are involved in decision-making in the fight against a pollution event, to increase the safety of operators and the population and to improve prevention and response
